Guru Mahadasha · 16 years · the chapter of expansion
A Mahadasha is a chapter of life ruled by one planet. Jupiter (Guru) is wisdom and expansion — teachers, faith, children, generosity, and the sense that life has meaning beyond the day's tasks.
Where Jupiter stands, life tends to grow and forgive. A Jupiter chapter tends to prove the generous reading of a situation right.
A year inside it: a year of expansion — teachers, meaning, and doors that open when you say yes.
| Length | 16 years of the 120-year Vimshottari cycle |
| Place in the order | The seventh of nine — after Rahu (18 years), before Saturn (19 years) |
| Birth stars that begin in it | Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada |
| When the turn comes | Doors open |
| As a sub-chapter | Inside another planet's chapter, a Jupiter sub-chapter reads momentum. Apply up, ask for the bigger scope, schedule the decisive conversation. |
A Jupiter chapter is classically the most supportive for growth — promotions, mentors, and opportunities that arrive looking like luck but are really alignment.
The move it rewards: Ask big. Apply up. Expansion attempts get an unusual tailwind now.
Every Mahadasha is divided into nine sub-chapters (Antardasha), one for each planet, beginning with its own. Each length is fixed by the two planets' years.
| Sub-chapter | The turn | Length | Begins |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jupiter–Jupiter | doors open | 2 years 1 month 18 days | at the start |
| Jupiter–Saturn | structure calls | 2 years 6 months 12 days | after 2 years 1 month 18 days |
| Jupiter–Mercury | words sharpen | 2 years 3 months 6 days | after 4 years 8 months |
| Jupiter–Ketu | life simplifies | 11 months 6 days | after 6 years 11 months 6 days |
| Jupiter–Venus | sweetness returns | 2 years 8 months | after 7 years 10 months 12 days |
| Jupiter–Sun | visibility rises | 9 months 18 days | after 10 years 6 months 12 days |
| Jupiter–Moon | feeling deepens | 1 year 4 months | after 11 years 4 months |
| Jupiter–Mars | the pace quickens | 11 months 6 days | after 12 years 8 months |
| Jupiter–Rahu | ambition surges | 2 years 4 months 24 days | after 13 years 7 months 6 days |
Lengths by the classical rule: the chapter's years times the sub-chapter's years, divided by ten, gives the months; the remainder times three gives the days. The nine add up to exactly 16 years.

How long does the Jupiter Mahadasha last?Sixteen years, out of the 120 years of the Vimshottari cycle. It opens with its own sub-chapter, Jupiter–Jupiter, which runs 2 years 1 month 18 days, and closes with Jupiter–Rahu, which runs 2 years 4 months 24 days.
What comes after the Jupiter Mahadasha? The Saturn Mahadasha, for 19 years. The order of the nine chapters never changes: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, and then Ketu again.
Who begins life in a Jupiter Mahadasha?Anyone whose Moon stood in Punarvasu, Vishakha or Purva Bhadrapada at birth, the three birth stars Jupiter rules. How much of the sixteen years remained at birth depends on how far the Moon had travelled through that star, which is why the birth time sharpens the dates.
