Budha Mahadasha · 17 years · the chapter of intellect
A Mahadasha is a chapter of life ruled by one planet. Mercury (Budha) is intelligence in motion — speech, wit, trade, analysis, and the pleasure of figuring things out.
Where Mercury stands, you think, talk and connect. A Mercury chapter rewards clear words: write it down, say it plainly, send it.
A year inside it: a year of words and craft — learning, trade, connection, the well-made thing.
| Length | 17 years of the 120-year Vimshottari cycle |
| Place in the order | The ninth of nine — after Saturn (19 years), before Ketu (7 years) |
| Birth stars that begin in it | Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati |
| When the turn comes | Words sharpen |
| As a sub-chapter | Inside another planet's chapter, a Mercury sub-chapter reads momentum. Interview, pitch, sign, publish — your words carry extra weight now. |
A Mercury chapter favors skills, analysis, communication, and commerce. Learning compounds unusually fast — credentials and new domains acquired now pay for decades.
The move it rewards: Upskill aggressively. Negotiate — your words carry extra weight.
Every Mahadasha is divided into nine sub-chapters (Antardasha), one for each planet, beginning with its own. Each length is fixed by the two planets' years.
| Sub-chapter | The turn | Length | Begins |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury–Mercury | words sharpen | 2 years 4 months 27 days | at the start |
| Mercury–Ketu | life simplifies | 11 months 27 days | after 2 years 4 months 27 days |
| Mercury–Venus | sweetness returns | 2 years 10 months | after 3 years 4 months 24 days |
| Mercury–Sun | visibility rises | 10 months 6 days | after 6 years 2 months 24 days |
| Mercury–Moon | feeling deepens | 1 year 5 months | after 7 years 1 month |
| Mercury–Mars | the pace quickens | 11 months 27 days | after 8 years 6 months |
| Mercury–Rahu | ambition surges | 2 years 6 months 18 days | after 9 years 5 months 27 days |
| Mercury–Jupiter | doors open | 2 years 3 months 6 days | after 12 years 15 days |
| Mercury–Saturn | structure calls | 2 years 8 months 9 days | after 14 years 3 months 21 days |
Lengths by the classical rule: the chapter's years times the sub-chapter's years, divided by ten, gives the months; the remainder times three gives the days. The nine add up to exactly 17 years.
When a day lights one part of your chart in this chapter, the counsel is to say it plainly.
