18 years · the chapter of amplification
A Mahadasha is a chapter of life ruled by one planet. Rahu is the north node — appetite, obsession and the unconventional path; the part of you hungry for what you have not yet had.
Where Rahu stands, you want more, sooner, differently. A Rahu chapter has real appetite; the work is wanting clearly, and checking that the ladder leans on your own wall.
A year inside it: a year of appetite — ambition, the unconventional, and horizons that pull.
| Length | 18 years of the 120-year Vimshottari cycle |
| Place in the order | The sixth of nine — after Mars (7 years), before Jupiter (16 years) |
| Birth stars that begin in it | Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha |
| When the turn comes | Ambition surges |
| As a sub-chapter | Inside another planet's chapter, a Rahu sub-chapter reads bold, but verify. An unconventional door opens — pursue it, and verify every promise twice. |
A Rahu chapter amplifies ambition and unconventional paths — foreign opportunities, new industries, rapid rises. Brilliant for bold moves; demands honest self-checks against shortcuts.
The move it rewards: Consider the unconventional or foreign option seriously — and verify everything twice.
Every Mahadasha is divided into nine sub-chapters (Antardasha), one for each planet, beginning with its own. Each length is fixed by the two planets' years.
| Sub-chapter | The turn | Length | Begins |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rahu–Rahu | ambition surges | 2 years 8 months 12 days | at the start |
| Rahu–Jupiter | doors open | 2 years 4 months 24 days | after 2 years 8 months 12 days |
| Rahu–Saturn | structure calls | 2 years 10 months 6 days | after 5 years 1 month 6 days |
| Rahu–Mercury | words sharpen | 2 years 6 months 18 days | after 7 years 11 months 12 days |
| Rahu–Ketu | life simplifies | 1 year 18 days | after 10 years 6 months |
| Rahu–Venus | sweetness returns | 3 years | after 11 years 6 months 18 days |
| Rahu–Sun | visibility rises | 10 months 24 days | after 14 years 6 months 18 days |
| Rahu–Moon | feeling deepens | 1 year 6 months | after 15 years 5 months 12 days |
| Rahu–Mars | the pace quickens | 1 year 18 days | after 16 years 11 months 12 days |
Lengths by the classical rule: the chapter's years times the sub-chapter's years, divided by ten, gives the months; the remainder times three gives the days. The nine add up to exactly 18 years.
When a day lights one part of your chart in this chapter, the counsel is to want one thing there, not five.

How long does the Rahu Mahadasha last?Eighteen years, out of the 120 years of the Vimshottari cycle. It opens with its own sub-chapter, Rahu–Rahu, which runs 2 years 8 months 12 days, and closes with Rahu–Mars, which runs 1 year 18 days.
What comes after the Rahu Mahadasha? The Jupiter Mahadasha, for 16 years. The order of the nine chapters never changes: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, and then Ketu again.
Who begins life in a Rahu Mahadasha?Anyone whose Moon stood in Ardra, Swati or Shatabhisha at birth, the three birth stars Rahu rules. How much of the eighteen years remained at birth depends on how far the Moon had travelled through that star, which is why the birth time sharpens the dates.
